The Social Network
This is a busy time for me in Vancouver. Its Film Festival time so I am doing my best to take in as many foreign and documentary films as I can. That is the one thing that I do give VIFF credit for. It stays away from getting all the high profile movies that say a TIFF or Sundance may get and instead focuses on Canadian films and a lot of stuff from Asia. Not that I don’t want to see Black Swan or 127 Hours, but they will be coming here soon so there is no rush. Regardless, you can’t always get to see what you want and sometimes you have to wait. This happened to me on Monday. I arrived at the theatre, all the movies were sold out, so I had 2.5 hours to kill. Good thing the first run theatre is just around the corner and I could make a 4:00 screening of David Finchers new film, “The Social Network”
I was excited to see this. An Aaron Sorkin penned, Fincher directed film about the creation of Facebook. How was this going to work? Luckily for me it pretty much worked on every level. I don’t want to get too much into the story because basically I hate recapping movies. Just go see it. But I will say that this movie made me want to delete my FB account. Mainly because Jesse Eisenberg does such a good job at making Mark Zuckerberg come across as such an asshole that I want nothing to do with him. He is a nerd with a mean streak and an ego to match. Not that being confident in what you do is a bad thing, but there are limits and after a while you just wanted the Winklevoss twins to man up and beat the shit out of the dude and put him in his place.
This movie is also an exercise in understated genius. There is a CG effect in this film that is so good, you won’t even know it is there. It took me an hour to figure it out and my friend never did and we are both editors. Great job Mr. Fincher. (I figured it out, only because I heard talk about some amazing CG going into it, so that is all I am going to tell you) This is a David Fincher movie but it is unlike anything he has done before. I love the way he can keep the look and feeling of all his past films, yet have the content be unlike anything he has tackled before. At any minute you are expecting something drastic to happen, but it never does. The story just keeps unfolding and unfolding and we all learn how this thing called Facebook became to be. And it is honestly way more exciting then it sounds. Like!!

Salt In The Wound

Two words: Catalytic Converter. With those two words I suddenly find myself $ 900 in the hole. I love my car, I have 2004 VW Golf. It is the perfect car for me. We have been through a lot of miles together, she has always been there for me and she is so cute. l had a mental breakdown when told that I have to get a new catalytic converter. I got angry. Anger because everything is so unknown, I don’t understand the world of cars and how to fix them and that is scary. That is life though…It is uncertain and unpredictable and we have to roll with the punches… The question is: am I still rolling with the punches when I am writing a check and balling my eyes out?
Delta Spirit is a local band, they originated from San Diego, CA and currently reside in my hometown of Long Beach. Right there they get bonus points. Their sophomore full length album seems more focused. Their mix of Americana and soul-pop has been refined. This might be my favorite song from the album.

Your honour, I feel so confident of Marge Simpson’s guilt that I can waste the courts time by rating the super-hunks.
- The Blue-Haired Lawyer
It’s a show unlike any other this week as Steve and Brian duke it out… Well, George Clooney and Brad Pitt duke it out… Well, Steve and Brian duke it out through George and Brad’s movies. We picked 5 movies for each actor and stacked them up against eachother to see who’s the super-iest of the super-hunks.
